Platinum is the most dense and most expensive of precious metals used for making jewellery. It was discovered in the 16th Century by the Spanish in South America, but wasn’t considered a precious metal until the early 1700s.
Platinum is normally found in near pure form in jewellery, the UK hallmarking standard is 950 or 95%, although in Europe and the Americas 900 is very common, but can even be found as low as 500. (see hallmark section)
Platinum has a natural white colour which does not tarnish with age. Over time the surface of the platinum can scratch and dull through wear and tear, not being as lustrous as gold alloys. This can be remedied with a simple repolish as with other metals.
